Eric D. Nelson, Ph.D., Entrepreneur and Life Visionary; is a small business owner of an insurance company and investment firm in Aurora, Co. Dr. Nelson is a Certified Family Mediator and a former Adjunct Faculty Member at Colorado State University in Fort Collins. He is a veteran community and political organizer who have been involved in the Aurora community for over seventeen years. He also served in the U.S. Air Force. Dr. Nelson is a native of Georgia. He has a wife and three children. He enjoys various sports along with watching lots of action, drama and horror movies.
Dr. Nelson was successfully elected to Aurora Public School Board to work in collaboration with other board directors to increase academic achievement for all students, garner greater community engagement, and promote accountability in the APS administrative level. Dr. Nelson has extensive experience working with young people as a volunteer and mentor, as well as in his previous work as Board member for Bennie E. Goodwin After-School Academic Program for youth, a youth civic engagement nonprofit. He is very excited and humble to serve as a Board of Education Director at Aurora Public Schools.
Dr. Nelson has extensive volunteer and community organizing experience. The long list of organizations and causes in which he has been engaged includes community engagement in Aurora serving on the Colorado Association of School Boards, Aurora Human Relations Commission, Aurora Branch NAACP & State Conference, Colorado Mental Health Professionals (founding member), Aurora Key Community Response Team, Aurora Project ACHIEVE Youth Mentoring, Leaders are Readers/Read Across America, Denver Mayor's African American Commission, Alzheimer's Association African-American Advisory committee of Colorado, American Legion Post 30, Bennie E. Goodwin After-School Academic Program for youth Advisory, Dr. Martin Luther King Committee, Denver Consistory, Ancient Egyptian Arabic Order Nobles Mystic Shrine, and Colorado Prince Hall Foundation for youth, Rocky Mountain School of Expeditionary Learning The Board of Cooperative Educational Services, Mental Health America of Colorado Education Committee, Colorado Black Women for Political Action (CBWPA), League of Women Voters of Arapahoe County, Progressive Change Campaign Committee (PCCC alumni), Congressional Black Caucus Leadership Institute (alumni), The Retired Enlisted Association (TREA), Sims-Fayola Foundation, and You Can Begin Again/You Can Begin Again Too, Inc., Greater Metro Denver Ministerial Alliance, and The Gateway Optimist Club
As an educator, community leader, and volunteer; Dr. Nelson's main objective will be to act as a representative for the students of our city, ensuring they are put first.
Dr. Nelson holds a B.S. in Theology from Union Bible Theological Seminary, a Master of Divinity in Theology from United Theological Seminary, and a Doctorate degree in Theology and Apologetics from Christian Bible Institute & Seminary, Houston, TX. He received an honorary Doctorate in Public Service from Denver Institute of Urban Studies and Adult College. Dr. Nelson holds multiple post-graduate certificates from The Colorado School for Family Therapy. He is also a former Minister at Heritage Christian Center and currently an Elder at the Potter's House Church of Denver.
Dr. Nelson feels anyone with a positive mental attitude that tries hard enough and aim high they will achieve success.
